Rome, GA - It took the Rome Braves 14 innings but they came away a winner by defeating the Augusta GreenJackets 6-5 Wednesday afternoon in a game that took four hours to complete.
Rome jumped on the board with three runs in the first inning highlighted by a two RBI triple by Edward Salcedo who crossed the plate himself on an infield error by Carlos Willoughby, Augusta made it a 3-1 game in the fifth on an infield groundout by Sundrendy Windster. The Braves got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Keenan Wiley doubled and scored on a single by Elmer Reyes for the 4-1 lead.
In the sixth, Ydwin Villegas reached on a strike out and wild pitch and later scored on a double by Carlos Willoughby. Adam Duvall singled home Willoughby making the score 4-3. Rome answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by David Rohm for the 5-3 advantage. Augusta tied the game with two runs in the ninth. After one out, Dan Burkhart and Windster both reached on singles. Devin Harris then grounded a hard shot to third that was misplayed by Salcedo allowing a run to score. With Willoughby batting, Rome reliever Kyle Mertins threw a wild pitch and Chris Lofton crossed the plate to tie the game. Lofton had entered the game as a pinch runner for Windster.
Both bullpens held the score a 5-5 until the 14th when Keenan Wiley and Elmer Reyes both singled before Matt Lipka hit a shot up the middle driving home Wiley for the 6-5 victory.
Danilo Alvarez (1-0) gets his first win in relief for the Braves while Shawn Sanford (0-1) picks up the loss for Augusta.
Rome concludes their series and homestand with Augusta starting tomorrow at 7pm.
