Today: The Gnats will try to snap a four-game losing streak in game three of a four-game series in Hickory, NC against the Hickory Crawdads, the SAL affiliate of the Texas Rangers. This is game six of a seven-game road trip. The Gnats have lost four straight since winning 8-0 on Opening Night.
Home Opener: The Gnats will return to Savannah for their home opener on Friday, April 15th against the Greenville Drive. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Fireworks follow the game on Opening Night and gates will open two hours prior to game time. The first 5,000 fans to visit Grayson Stadium on Opening Weekend will receive a Magnet Schedule courtesy of the US Coast Guard.
Last Night: The Crawdads beat the Gnats 6-1 on the strength of a six-run fourth inning against starter Gonzalez Germen and reliever Josh Edgin. LHP Chase Huchingson was a bright spot in relief for Savannah. He stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout to end the fourth and allowed just two singles in his 4.1 innings of relief with no walks and five strikeouts.
Now Pitching: RHP Greg Peavey will make his second professional start after throwing five shutout innings with eight strikeouts in the Gnats' 8-0 win on Opening Night last Thursday in Charleston, WV. The Mets selected Peavey in the 6th round of the 2010 draft out of Oregon State. Peavey was the second Oregon State Beaver to be selected in 2010 after Tyler Waldron, who was picked by Pittsburgh in the 5th round and is now assigned to the West Virginia Power. In 2010 with Oregon State, Peavey was an All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention and a two-time conference Player of the Week. Peavey had been drafted twice before: in the 24th round of the 2007 draft out of Hudson's Bay High School by the New York Yankees and in the 32nd round of the 2009 draft by the Houston Astros. In high school, he was named Washington's Class 3A baseball Player of the Year in 2007. Peavey has had national-level success even before high school, helping pitch the Hazel Dell Metro Little League team to the Little League World Series in 2000, and the Hazel Dell Metro teams that won Babe Ruth Championships in 2001 and 2002.
Hot Honeck: 1B Sam Honeck, who was 1-3 with a walk last night, has hit safely in four of the Gnats' five games. His .412 batting average is 11th in the SAL.
Four Down: The Gnats have been outscored 26-3 on their current four-game losing streak. During their four-game losing streak, the Gnats have hit .165 (18 H/109) AB while allowing their opponents to hit .322 (37 H/115 AB). The Gnats have earned 10 walks, the same number as their opponents. However, the Gnats have five extra-base hits in their last four games while their opponents have double that number with 10.
In Japan, Four is Unlucky Too: In the fourth inning of games this year, the Gnats have been outscored 13-1.
Javier's Homers: Javier Rodriguez hit his second home run of the year Monday. He is one of 12 players in the SAL with multiple home runs.
Vs. Hickory: The Gnats are now 0-2 against Hickory in 2011. The Gnats and Crawdads split the 2010 season series 2-2. All four games were played at Historic Grayson Stadium. Because the Crawdads visited Savannah in 2009, but the Gnats did not return the trip, this is the first time the Gnats have played in Hickory since May 5-10, 2008, when the Gnats took three of four games. In 2011, the two teams are scheduled for eight games, with the Crawdads visiting Savannah May 9-12.
