Lansing, MI - RHP Jeff Ames allowed one walk but nothing else in five no-hit innings as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (37-30) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (32-36) with a final score of 5-1 on Saturday. Ames, a Midwest League All-Star selection, earned his team-high sixth win in his final appearance before the 2013 MWL Summer All-Star Classic on June 18 in Dayton, OH.

An error-prone Lugnuts defense aided Bowling Green throughout the ballgame as most of the Hot Rods runs came in unearned. With two on and two out in the second inning, Ryan Dunn hit a ground ball between the legs of Lansing shortstop Emilio Guerrero. Justin O'Conner raced home and Brandon Martin ran to third base where left field Dwight Smith, Jr. missed a throw to third base that allowed O'Conner and Martin to both score on the play.

More errors helped the Hot Rods score in the fourth and sixth frames. O'Conner singled to lead off the fourth and advanced to second on the play with a wild throw from third baseman Gustavo Pierre. Marty Gantt singled to bring in O'Conner for a 3-0 lead. In the sixth, O'Conner reached on an error by Kellen Sweeney at first base. O'Conner took second on a wild pitch and scored with a Patrick Leonard double to deep center field.

Through those early stages of the contest, Ames was pitching a gem for Bowling Green. After retiring the side in the first, Ames walked Guerrero with two outs in the second inning but stranded him after inducing a fly out from Chris Hawkins. That play was the first of ten straight outs for Ames and his defense as the Vancouver, WA native cruised through five no-hit innings.

Lansing broke up a bid for a no-hitter and a shutout with a quick outburst in the bottom of the sixth. Aaron Munoz opened the frame with a double off RHP Ryan Garton. Munoz advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored from third after a pickoff throw from O'Conner went into left field. Sweeney singled and made it to third base before being left on base to end the inning and the only Lugnut rally.

Bowling Green added a final score in the ninth inning. Ryan Dunn doubled to the right field wall and scored with a single off the bat of Andrew Toles to bring the lead to 5-1. In the home half of the ninth, RHP Matt Ramsey finished his second inning of relief with three quick outs to preserve the Hot Rods lead and earn his fourth save of the season.

With the series tied at a game apiece, the Hot Rods and Lugnuts have the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:05 PM CDT with Hot Rods RHP Taylor Guerrieri (4-2, 2.76) facing Lugnuts LHP Alonzo Gonzalez (2-5, 5.40).
