Ames aces Lugnuts, 5-1

LANSING, Mich. - Jeff Ames pitched five no-hit innings and Justin O'Connor scored three runs as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (37-30) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (32-36), 5-1, in front of 7,991 fans at Cooley Law School Stadium on Saturday night.

Ames (Win, 6-1) allowed just a single baserunner on a second inning walk to Emilio Guerrero. He struck out two batters but was removed from the game after five innings with a no-hitter in hand.

Ames gave way to Ryan Garton, who promptly gave up a double to Aaron Munoz to lead off the sixth inning, the first Lansing hit of the game. Munoz came around to score after a passed ball on a throwing error on O'Connor, bringing the Lugs to within 4-1 at the time.

The Lugnuts committed a season-high five errors in the game, resulting in four of five Bowling Green runs being unearned.

O'Connor reached on infield singles in the second and fourth, scoring both times, before reaching on an error in the sixth inning and coming around to score.

The only earned run of the game came across in the top of the ninth when Andrew Toles singled to center, scoring Ryan Dunn to extend Bowling Green's lead to 5-1.

Lansing starter Javier Avendano (Loss, 4-5) pitched five innings, allowing three unearned runs on four hits. He struck out three and issued two walks.

The rubber match of the series and the final game of the first half of the season will start at 2:05 p.m. on a Sunday Kid's Day at Cooley Law School Stadium. The Lugnuts will send southpaw Alonzo Gonzalez (2-5, 5.40) to the mound against Bowling Green right-hander Taylor Guerrieri (4-2, 2.76).
