Cedar Rapids, IA - After letting a two-run lead slip away in the eighth, the Peoria Chiefs went back to work and knocked off the first place Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-2 in 10 innings on Friday night to open the final series of the first half. The win puts the Chiefs at 36-29 on the half and in third place with two games remaining before the MWL All-Star break.

The Chiefs and Kernels went scoreless into the fourth inning with the hosts losing two base-runners between third and home. Patrick Wisdom put the Chiefs on top in the fourth with a one-out solo home run to right field off Brett Lee. The homer was the team-leading 10th of the season for Wisdom and his fifth against a lefty.

Joe Cuda cruised through six innings for the Chiefs and extended his personal shutout streak to 16 1/3 innings. He gave way to Dixon Llorens in the seventh and the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead into the eighth. Jordan Walton greeted Cedar Rapids reliever Kaleb Merck with a double to start the eighth and moved to third on a single by Wisdom. Nick Martini put the Chiefs up 2-0 with a single to center and with one out Jimmy Parque walked to load the bases. But Merck escaped the inning as Gerwuins Velazco bounced into a double play.

Cedar Rapids came out swinging in the bottom of the eighth as the MWL's leading hitter Byron Buxton led off with a single, his first hit of the night. Buxton swiped second for his 28th steal of the season and moved to third on a flyout to center. After a lineout, Dalton Hicks tied the game with his 10th homer of the season. The two-run shot to left field resulted in the Chiefs third blown save in four games on this road trip.

Neither team threatened in the ninth and Steven Gruver took over for the Kernels on the mound in the tenth. Walton hit a grounder to the left of Candido Pimentel at second and the throw to first was wild allowing Walton to move to second. With one out, Martini reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. Jesus Montero hit a potential double-play ball but Travis Harrison misplayed the grounder at third as Walton scored and Martini moved to second. With two on and just one out, the Chiefs pinch-hit Luis Perez who was added to the roster just before game time from Rookie Ball Johnson City. Perez drove a 2-1 pitch out of the stadium to left-center in his first Chiefs at-bat for a 6-2 lead. Joe Scanio allowed two hits in the bottom of the tenth but retired the final two to earn the win.

Cuda threw six shutout innings with five hits allowed. He walked one and struck out four in the no-decision. Llorens allowed two runs on two hits over two innings while striking out two in the blown save. Scanio (2-1) allowed two hits over two shutout innings in the win.
