New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - In a battle of rehabbing major league pitchers, Richmond's Ryan Vogelsong got the best of the Fisher Cats and Blue Jays pitcher Drew Hutchison in an 8-3 Fisher Cats loss on Sunday afternoon in Richmond. Andy Burns and Jack Murphy had productive days offensively, but a late home run by Tyler LaTorre secured the victory and the series for the Squirrels, leaving the Fisher Cats with a 2-4 record on their southern swing.
Richmond struck first in the bottom of the first. They loaded the bases against Hutchison with nobody out. Hutch was able to retired the next three hitters to limit the damage, but a sacrifice fly put the Squirrels on top 1-0.
They added a run in the third, once again generated by the top of the order. A single and an error put runners at the corners. A successful double steal resulted in a second run and a 2-0 Squirrels' advantage.
Hutchison left the game after 4.1 innings, giving way to Dustin Antolin in the fifth. The Flying Squirrels were able to scratch out three runs against Antolin, all coming with two outs, most coming on softly-hit balls that found the holes in the defense.
The Fisher Cats began the comeback trail in the sixth. Burns homered with one out against Vogelsong, cutting the deficit to 5-1. An inning later, against reliever Taylor Rogers, Jack Murphy laced a two-out double to right to make it a two-run game at 5-3.
It stayed that way until the eighth when the Squirrels put the game away against Ryan Tepera. A lead-off error was followed by a one-out walk. That brought up LaTorre, 0-3 to that point in the game, and he smacked a 2-0 offering to right for a three-run homer to end all thoughts of a Fisher Cats comeback.
Vogelsong (W; 2-0) allowed just one run over six in his final rehab start with Richmond. He struck out five to improve to 2-0 with the Flying Squirrels.
Murphy and Burns each wrapped up productive road trips. In three games, Murphy was 6-11 with a homer and four runs batted in. Burns homered twice and drove in six runs playing in five of the six games.
The Fisher Cats now head home for an off-day Monday followed by the start of a six-game homestand on Tuesday night. The opener with the Bowie Baysox will feature a free cap giveaway courtesy of Dead River Company, followed by splash day, three fireworks shows, and a Sunday giveaway. Tickets are available by visiting www.nhfishercats.com, stopping by the box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, or by calling (603) 641-2005.
Tuesday's pitching match-up features Marcus Stroman (6-2, 2.96) for the Fisher Cats against Bowie LHP Jake Pettit (5-5, 4.85). You can follow the game beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
