New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Erie SeaWolves made their final 2013 Regular Season appearance in Connecticut on Sunday afternoon a satisfying one as they combined solid pitching and timely hitting to defeat the host Rock Cats 9-5 at New Britain Stadium . The loss snapped the Rock Cats' six-game winning streak.
After a scoreless first inning, Erie sent nine batters to the plate in the second frame against New Britain starter and eventual loser Trevor May; before the dust settled, the SeaWolves plated five quick runs by parlaying aggressive base running with five singles and a base-on-balls. The inning's key hits were a pair of 2-RBI singles by Eugenio Suarez and Daniel Fields.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Evan Bigley lined a one-out single to center, advanced to second on a walk to Reynaldo Rodriguez, and came around to score the Rock Cats' first marker when Jordan Parraz laced a two-out single to right.
With May still on the mound for the 'Cats, Erie quickly responded with three more runs in the top of the 3rd when they received three walks in advance of another 2-RBI single by Suarez and a 1-RBI hit by Fields. After two and half innings, the Pittsburgh Pirates' affiliate enjoyed an 8-1 lead.
In the bottom of the 4th following a walk to Bigley, Parraz belted the first pitch he saw from Erie starter Matt Crouse far over the LF wall to cut the lead to 8-3. The HR was Parraz's 9th of 2013.
New Britain scored twice more in the 5th frame when Danny Santana - who now leads the Eastern League with 124 Hits - opened with a double to left. After a Nate Hanson base hit advanced Santana to third, Dan Rohlfing singled to center scoring Santana. One batter later, Bigley collected his second hit on the afternoon, a line single to center that scored Hanson and reduced the New Britain deficit to 8-5. The Rock Cats would not score again.
Erie plated the game's final run in the 8th inning when Tyler Collins singled to left and came around to score the SeaWolves' 9th run on Marcus Lemon's triple to right.
For the second consecutive game, the Rock Cats used five pitchers in a game. While May went just 2 2/3rds, he was relieved in succession by the quartet of Cole Johnson, Dan Sattler, Ryan O'Rourke, and Dakota Watts. May took the loss and saw his record fall to 6-8.
Matt Crouse picked up the W for Erie and improved his record to 7-9.
