RHP Noah Syndergaard (4-0, 2.25) vs. RHP Rob Gilliam (3-5, 4.09)
Sunday, August 4, 2013 - Game #114 - Away Game #65
Metro Bank Park - Harrisburg, PA - 2:00 PM
LAST GAME: The B-Mets took an early lead and never trailed as they beat Harrisburg, 3-2 on Saturday night. Travis d'Arnaud hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Binghamton a lead before an out was recorded. Their final run came from a Josh Rodriguez sacrifice fly in the third inning. On the mound, Logan Verrett did not allow a base hit until the fifth inning, and allowed two runs in five frames in the win. Chasen Bradford, Chase Huchingson and Jeff Walters combined for four scoreless innings of relief to preserve the win. Harrisburg stranded the tying run in scoring position three different times, but the bullpen did not break. Verrett earned his 10th win of the season, and just his second since June 15. Walters continued his stellar season with his league-leading 32nd save in 34 chances.
BINGHAMTON PITCHER: RHP Noah Syndergaard makes his eighth start of the season for the B-Mets, and his first against Harrisburg. He is 4-0 in seven starts, and the B-Mets are 6-1 in games that Syndergaard starts in. In his last start, he was dominant in a win over the Trenton Thunder on July 28. The 6'6" righty threw six innings and gave up one run while striking out eight. The only baserunner he allowed was a solo home run he gave up to Slade Heathcott in the top of the first inning. Syndergaard has allowed a first inning home run in three of his seven starts. In 36.0 innings with the B-Mets, opponents are hitting .226. He began the season in St. Lucie (High-A), and made the FSL All-Star Game before being promoted to Binghamton on June 23.
HARRISBURG PITCHER: RHP Rob Gilliam makes his 14th start of the season for the Senators, and his first against Binghamton. In his last start, he allowed three runs in five innings in a loss to the Trenton Thunder. Gilliam has lost each of his last three decisions, and only has just one win since June 9. In five home starts this season, he is 2-1 with a 3.81 ERA in 26.0 innings. In 66.0 innings, he has struck out 54 batters and held opponents to a .242 batting average against. In July he posted a 2.91 ERA, which is the best of any month this season. He was drafted by the Athletics in the eighth round of the 2009 draft out of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
BRING OUT THE BROOMS: A win on Sunday would give the B-Mets their fifth series sweep of the season. It is the final regular season game scheduled against the Senators. In the previous nine games, they are 6-3. Saturday's win handed Binghamton their 20th series win this season.
HIGH WATER MARK: Saturday's victory put the B-Mets at 26 games over .500, which matches their best record they have had this season. Their best record in franchise history was on September 1st, 2000 when the B-Mets were 27 games over .500 (82-55).
INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS: Jeff Walters earned his 32nd save of the season on Saturday against Harrisburg, adding to his franchise record for most saves in a single season. He passed the record held by Jerrod Riggan, who recorded 28 saves in the 2000 season. The most career saves in Binghamton history is 36, set by Tim Lavigne. Walters is four shy of the record, with 30 games in the regular season left.
TRYING TO FIND THE BATS: Over their last ten games, Binghamton is hitting .191 (56-for-293) as a team. They are 5-5 during that stretch, and have been held to five hits or fewer in six of those ten games. They are hitting .184 (14-76) with runners in scoring position during that time.
HOMERLESS DROUGHT: As a team, Binghamton has only hit four home runs in their last 15 games. On the season, the B-Mets rank third in the league with 93 round trippers. Allan Dykstra is tied for second in the league with 18 home runs.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets have an off day on Monday. They start a four-game series with Altoona on Tuesday. It is a doubleheader, with the first game of the day starting at 5:05 PM at NYSEG Stadium.
