New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The surging Rock Cats scored both early and late at New Britain Stadium on Saturday night en route to a 6-4 win over Erie, a victory that would be their sixth straight. In a game that was delayed nearly two hours at the start by threatening weather, the New Britain offense was led by their slugging First Baseman - Reynaldo Rodriguez - who collected 3 hits on the night, including his 5th-inning home run which provided the margin of victory. The round-tripper was Rodriguez's 15th of the 2013 campaign.
The Rock Cats jumped out to an early lead when they banged out five hits and 4 runs in the 1st inning off the SeaWolves' starter and loser, Warwick Saupold. The Erie hurler allowed 8 hits and 5 runs over five complete innings of work and saw his record fall to 6-4.
New Britain used a total of five pitchers on the evening with starter B. J. Hermsen tossing three innings before giving way to a quartet of effective relievers. Hermsen allowed 3 hits and 3 runs in his outing. The SeaWolves climbed back into the game in the second frame when two of their 3 safeties off Hermsen - combined with a walk and a wild pitch - resulted in 3 runs coming across.
With Blake Martin on in relief of Hermsen, the SeaWolves tied the score in the 5th inning when a walk, a single and a double steal resulted in James Robbins swiping home to tie the score at 4.
The Rock Cats moved ahead for good in the bottom of the 5th when Rodriguez belted a 2-1 Saupold offering far over the left field wall to give New Britain a 5-4 advantage.
Rodriguez third safety of the night was an 8th inning ground ball that never left the infield, but it preceded Kyle Knudson's double to left center that brought Rodriguez around all the way from first base with the Rock Cats sixth and final run.
With eventual winner Daniel Turpen (1-0) tossing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, he and two other Rock Cat relievers held Erie in check from the 5th inning on. Matt Hauser earned his 2nd Save of the year when he threw 2 hitless/scoreless innings over the final two frames.
