Chesapeake Baysox News Release

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (56-57) came through with clutch hits when they needed them, including a pair of two-out RBI hits to break a tie in the seventh inning, on the way to a 6-4 win over Portland (56-58) Sunday to avoid the sweep.

"We had been struggling with runners in scoring position the whole homestand," said Manager Gary Kendall. "At times we just weren't really good with runners in scoring position even in games we won. Getting the big hit from Buck [Britton] and Caleb with the RBI single were huge."

Baysox starter Tyler Wilson pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one in the win. Reliever Oliver Drake pitched two scoreless innings to finish out the game, allowing one hit while striking out three in his sixth save of the season.

Portland scored first in the top of the third inning against Wilson. Heiker Meneses hit a one out single to center field and moved to third base on a single to right field by Matt Johnson. Shannon Wilkerson plated Meneses with a sacrifice fly to give the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox utilized their first hit with runners in scoring position in more than two games to come back and take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning against Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt. Right fielder Buck Britton drew a lead off walk and moved to third base on a single to center field by catcher Caleb Joseph. Shortstop Niuman Romero plated Britton with a sacrifice fly and Joseph then scored from second base on a single to center field by first baseman Seth Loman to make the score 2-1.

Bowie added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Second baseman Josh Horton hit a lead off infield single and left fielder Kyle Hudson followed with a walk. Center fielder Trayvon Robinson advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Britton brought them home with a two-RBI single to center field that gave the Baysox a 4-1 lead.

The Sea Dogs cut into the Baysox lead in the top of the sixth inning. Matty Johnson reached first base with one out and moved to second base on a Wilkerson single to right field. Both runners advanced on a Garin Cecchini groundout and scored on a two-out Christian Vazquez single to right field that made the score 4-3.

J.C. Linares tied the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run down the left field line.

The Baysox used a two-out rally to retake the lead in the bottom of the seventh against Portland reliever Miguel Celestino. Robinson drew a two-out walk and Matt Maloney then replaced Celestino on the mound. Britton immediately doubled to center field to plate Robinson and Joseph followed with a single to left field that scored Britton and gave Bowie a 6-4 lead.

Celestino took the loss for Portland, pitching two and one-third innings and allowing one run on one hit while striking out one and walking one.

After an off day Monday, the Baysox depart for a six game road series with games in New Hampshire and Portland. The team returns home Tuesday, Aug 13 for a seven game home series against Erie and Richmond.
