Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Chris Roberson once roamed centerfield for the Philadelphia Phillies. Wednesday night, he played like a guy who should still be there.

Roberson hit two home runs, went three-for-four, scored two and drove in four and also made an outstanding catch on a fly ball in the eighth that saved a run, as he led the Winnipeg Goldeyes to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Sioux City Explorers.

With the win, the Fish swept the Explorers right out of Shaw Park, taking all three games of the three-game series. With their third straight win, the Goldeyes also improved to 24-15 and remained in first place in the American Association's North Division.

"I had some fun tonight," said Roberson after the game. "I went to the plate with energy tonight. I've been working real hard with my timing. I'm trying to make the right move and go with the pitches instead of being too aggressive on the inside pitch. I'm seeing the ball a lot better."

This Goldeyes opened the scoring in the first when Roberson hit the fourth pitch of the ball game over the Liquor Marts sign in right field. Later, Luis Alen walked and scored on a double by Gabby Martinez.

The start was exactly what lefty Tony Butler needed. Butler, who just joined the Goldeyes this week, had an outstanding first start, going 5.1 innings allowing only one run on three hits while the Goldeyes bats boomed.

In the second inning, the Fish extended their lead to 5-0 as Kyle Day led off with a solo homer then David Narodowski singled, Dan Barbero singled and after both runners moved up 90 feet on an error, Roberson drove them home with a single.

Sioux City scored its first run in the fifth, but Winnipeg answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jon Weber hit a solo homer. After the Explorers made it 6-2 in the top of the seventh, Winnipeg made it 7-2 on Roberson's second homer of the game, a solo blast that put the game out of reach.

"I'm really proud of the guys right now, considering everything we've gone through with the injuries, the roster changes, 30-games-in-30-days all that," said manager Rick Forney on the TSN 1290 post-game show with Paul Edmonds. "It's nice to sweep what I think is a really good team."

Butler got the win (2-2, 4.03 ERA) while Andrew Snowden (0-2, 7.54 ERA) took the loss. There was no save, but the Goldeyes four relief pitchers, Kaohi Downing, Zach Baldwin, Craig James and Billy Spottiswood were solid.

As soon as Wednesday night's game finished, the Goldeyes got on the bus and headed out to Wichita, Kansas. Friday night, the Goldeyes will meet the Wichita Wingnuts as Ace Walker (3-2, 3.44 ERA) will get the start.

Game time is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
