St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 27, 2012) - The St. Paul Saints and their fans have a soft spot for animals. For 20 seasons pigs have roamed the ballpark, petting zoos have popped up on Sundays and goats and sheep were a part of a wedding. With their affinity for animals the Saints used their most recent homestand from June 22-24 to help raise money for the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth.
The Saints and their fans raised $1,080 and they did it a couple of different ways. The wedding of the season between the Saints two, four-legged mascots, Kim Lardashian and Kris Hamphries was the first charitable avenue. With a pair of goats and sheep a part of the wedding party the night was an unforgettable one. As all great weddings are known to have, there was a memorable dollar dance. Unfortunately, Lardashian, who kept the groom waiting at the altar for a few minutes and had everyone wondering whether she would show or not, wouldn't take part in the custom. One of her "bridesmaids," a male Saints intern dressed in an elegant dress who hails from Duluth, stepped to the forefront and raised more than $300 in a spectacular show of humility and philanthropy.
The Saints fans also took part in raising money. Since 1993 they have collected money for each home run hit by a Saints player and usually donate the money at the end of the season to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, a program near and dear to the heart of Saints owner Mike Veeck whose daughter Rebecca has Retinitis Pigmentosa. For one weekend, however, they collected money and decided to help our neighbors up north. With home runs by Ronnie Bourquin, Adam Frost and Willie Cabrera the fans of Section F helped raise a little over $700.
Along with the help of Saints partner MyTalk 107.1 the Saints continue to make a difference in the community. The Saints work with over 3,000 non-profit organizations and school groups with in-kind donations each year from across the state of Minnesota and beyond. Just another way the Saints and their fans help to make a difference.
The money is part of a larger effort between Hubbard Broadcasting, 5 Eyewitness News, Channel 45, KS95-FM 1500 ESPN and myTalk 107.1 in an effort to raise $5,000 to help flood recovery, through GiveMn.org, of the Lake Superior Zoological Society.
