Fish Reach 60 Wins with Extra Innings Win in Sioux Falls
August 30, 2011 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
During a four-game series in which pitcher Ace Walker got a base hit and outfielder Ridge Carpenter gave up a game-winning home run, nothing should surprise Winnipeg Goldeyes fans.
So when we tell you that on Wednesday night, outfielder Kody Kaiser pitched a scoreless 11th inning to get the win, Aaron Cook got his first save of the year and the Goldeyes not only started reliever Chad Benefield but used eight pitchers, you'll understand how crazy a meaningless series on the road to end the regular season can be.
In the end, Justin Bass singled home Brian Myrow with the winning run in the top of the 12th inning as the 2011 edition of the Goldeyes became the first team in franchise history to win 60 games. With a final record of 60-40, the Goldeyes finished 20 games above .500 and had the second best record in the American Association (South Division champion Grand Prairie finished 64-36).
Last night the Goldeyes wrapped up the regular season with a 4-3, 12-inning win over the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants. Other than the fact the Goldeyes won their 60th game and ended the campaign on a two-game winning streak, the game meant absolutely nothing.
After all, Winnipeg clinched the American Association's North Division pennant last Friday night after sweeping the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks right out of Shaw Park.
Tuesday night, the Goldeyes pounded out 15 hits as Myrow, Luis Alen and Wes Long each had three. Myrow also knocked in a pair of runs.
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the first inning when Price Kendall led off with a single and crossed the plate in front of Myrow, who hit a two-run homer, his 11th of the season.
With the score tied 2-2 in the third, Kody Kaiser hit a solo shot, his 11th of the season to give Winnipeg a 3-2 lead, but Sioux Falls came back to tie the game in the fifth, a tie that lasted seven more innings.
Kaiser (1-0, 0.00) got the win by pitching a scoreless 11th inning. Not bad for the American Association's leader in stolen bases this season. Cook picked up the save. Dan McDaniel (3-3, 3.21) suffered the loss.
Thursday night, the Goldeyes will play host to the St. Paul Saints in the opening game of a best-of-five American Association semi-final. Game time is 7 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290.
Playoff tickets are on sale now by visiting any Ticketmaster location, clicking on Ticketmaster.ca or by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE.
