Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
DURHAM, NC - The American Association of Independent Baseball announced Amarilllo Sox designated hitter Lee Cruz has been named to the annual All-Star team. The announcement follows Cruz being named as the 2011 Player of the Year yesterday.
Cruz had a stellar 2011 with the Sox, hitting team season highs with batting average (.324), home runs (18), RBI (94), hits (144) and doubles (38). Cruz's doubles and hits totals rank second all-time in Amarillo independent baseball history.
The right-handed St. Louis, Missouri-native joined Amarillo in the offseason after a 2010 stint with Yuma in the Golden League after being released after five seasons in the Chicago White Sox farm system.
Other All-Star choices include Fort Worth catcher and first baseman Kelly Gulledge and Trent Lockwood, respectively. Wichita Wingnuts infielders Juan Richardson and Josh Horn were named as the league-best third baseman and shortstop, while second baseman Brad Boyer of the Gary SouthShore Railcats earned top honors.
Top outfielders include Grand Prairie Airhogs Steven Douglas, Kansas City T-Bones Ray Sadler and The St. Paul Saints Ryan Patterson. Sioux Falls Phesants starting pitcher Ben Moore was named the top starting pitcher while Airhogs closer Jon Hunton was named the best reliever. Saints outfielder Jonathan Van Every was named the league's top defensive player.
