Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Stephen Douglas, who in 2011 set the American Association record for hits (160), hitting streaks (34) and on-base streaks (56 and counting), earned another honor Tuesday, as he was named to the league's postseason All-Star team, along with his teammate and Grand Prairie AirHogs closer Jon Hunton, who led the league with 25 saves in 2011 and earned the title of Relief Picher of the Year.
Douglas
Douglas joined the AirHogs in a trade with El Paso in late July, and was even more impressive since joining Grand Prairie. The left-handed hitter hit .392 in 29 games with the 'Hogs, with 14 extra-base hits and 21 RBIs - despite mostly hitting in the leadoff spot. Overall, the Georgia native finished with a .378 batting average, good for second in the league and first among players who played at least 70 games, led the league in hits, was fourth in total bases with 215, third in runs scored with 87 and was tied for first in doubles with 38. He also stole 24 bases and had six outfield assists on the season.
Hunton
Hunton saved 25 games in 29 attempts this season, and also picked up eight wins, easily giving him the most "relief points," which covers all relief wins, losses and saves. He finished with 87 points - 23 higher than Josh Dew of Wichita. The 6-foot-9 righty had a 1.77 ERA and allowed a .207 opponent's batting average, with 47 strikeouts in 51 innings. Hunton proved very durable in 2011, going into the final game of the season for the rest of the league tied for the most appearances with 49.
The full postseason all-star team was voted on by members of the field staff and media representing all 14 teams in the American Association.
