Fish One Run Short of Completing Comeback
June 19, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
After walking off on their opponents three times during last week's homestand, the Winnipeg Goldeyes were walked off on Wednesday night.
With the bases loaded on the bottom of the ninth inning, St. Paul Saints first baseman Dan Kaczrowski hit an RBI single to left field to beat the Goldeyes 4-3 in front of 3,896 spectators at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.
With the loss, the Goldeyes drop two of three in the series and fall into a first place tie with the Saints in the American Association's North Division with identical 17-15 records.
"It was a good game," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said on the TSN 1290 post-game show. "Unfortunately, they had a couple hits fall in in the bottom of the ninth."
The Saints staked a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings off Goldeyes starter Justin Garcia.
Goldeyes right fielder Josh Mazzola hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to begin the comeback. Leonard Davis then tied the game with a two-run homer of his own in the top of the eighth inning.
"It's a lot easier to complete a comeback at home and finish it off at the bottom of the inning," Vermilyea said about Winnipeg not quite finishing the comeback.
Mazzola, Tyler Graham and Nick Liles led Winnipeg with two hits each.
"It was nice to see Mazzola get a couple hits," Vermilyea said. "He's been a little frustrated at the plate lately. I am glad he was able to breakout."
Garcia posted a quality start for Winnipeg, allowing three runs over seven innings of work. He struck out nine saints and walked three.
"Justin Garcia gave us seven solid innings," Vermilyea said. "He only got in trouble when he left some pitches up and gave us a chance to win tonight.
Brendan Lafferty took the loss after pitching an inning of relief. He allowed the first two Saints batters in the bottom of the ninth inning to reach base before giving way to Patrick Keating, who walked Jordan Tripp, struck out Dwight Childs and gave up the winning hit to Kaczrowski.
St. Paul closer Matt Meyer pitched the ninth inning to earn the win.
The Goldeyes return home to begin a four-game series with the Lincoln Saltdogs Thursday night. Winnipeg will send Pete Gehle to the mound against Lincoln's Moses Melendez.
