St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 19, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints didn't let a tying two-run homer in the eighth deter them from a thrilling finish. They got a walk-off RBI single from Dan Kaczrowski to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium and are now tied for first with the Goldeyes in the North Division.
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the ninth left-handed hitter Brandon Tripp led off the inning with a single against left-hander Brendan Lafferty. Jose Hernandez then hit a sinking fly ball to right that Josh Mazzola dove for and just missed as the ball tipped his glove and went behind him. It allowed Brandon Tripp to take third and Hernandez went to second with a double. Lafferty left the game for closer Patrick Keating. He walked Jordan Tripp to load the bases. After a strikeout to Dwight Childs, Dan Kaczrowski stepped to the plate and on a 1-1 pitched laced a single to left that scored Brandon Tripp for the game winner.
The Saints needed the heroics because the Goldeyes tied the game in the eighth inning. Saints starter Mark Hamburger started the eighth by getting Casey Haerther to fly out. After giving up a single to Mazzola, Hamburger departed and gave way to the newest member of the Saints bullpen, Mike Koons. He got ahead of Leonard Davis 0-2, but Davis then knocked an opposite field homer to left, his fourth of the season, tying the game at three. Koons then gave up a single up the middle to Fehlandt Lentini, but his defense helped him out on the next play. Luis Alen hit a grounder up the middle that shortstop Adam Frost dove for, flipped the ball with his glove to Brad Boyer covering second, who fired to first for the double play. Saints starter Mark Hamburger was tremendous going 7.1 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four. He threw 118 pitches, 80 for strikes.
With the Saints leading 1-0 in the fourth Willie Cabrera, who was hitting in the fourth spot in the order for the first time this season, walloped a hanging breaking ball over the left field wall, his first of the season, to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth Kaczrowski walked with one out. He moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a two-out single from Joey Becker to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.
The Goldeyes got on the board in the top of the sixth when Mazzola hit a solo homer, his fourth of the season, to make it 3-1.
The Saints now head on the road to the U.S. Steel Yard and take on the Gary SouthShore Railcats in a four game series beginning on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. The Saints send RHP Wes Roemer (3-3, 6.29) to the mound against Railcats RHP Morgan Coombs (2-0, 5.79). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
