Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - Wingnuts' starter Ryan Hinson was dominant in eight innings and CJ Ziegler hit two home runs as Wichita beat the RailCats 7-1 on Thursday night. Gary (16-15) is in third place in the Central Division, four games back of Wichita. They split the four-game series and went 4-3 on their seven-game road trip.
Ryan Khoury led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk against RailCats starter Ari Ronick and Jake Kahaulelio followed with a two-run blast to left to put the Wingnuts ahead, 2-0.
Ronick retired the first two batters in the second inning but then gave up three straight hits, including an RBI double to left by Khoury to make it 3-0.
Wichita added to the lead in the fifth inning. Kahaulelio reached on an infield hit and moved to second on a passed ball. John Rodriguez drove him home with a single to center and CJ Ziegler followed with a home run to left to extend the lead to 6-0.
Hinson held the RailCats scoreless on one hit - a bunt single by Brian Kolb in the second - in the first six innings. He retired 14 batters in a row and didn't allow a baserunner from the third through sixth innings.
Gary finally scratched a run across in the seventh. Cristian Guerrero, Craig Maddox and Brian Kolb hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Drew Martinez hit into a fielder's choice to score Guerrero and pull the RailCats to within 6-1.
Ziegler homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Kyle Lindquist to get the run right back for the Wingnuts. It was his second homer of the game and 12th of the season, tops in the American Association.
Hinson (5-1) held the RailCats to a run on five hits in eight innings, walked two and struck out five. Ronick (3-3) took the loss for Gary, allowing a season-high six earned runs on nine hits.
The RailCats return home for an 11-game homestand starting on Thursday at 7:10 against the St. Paul Saints. It is Thirsty Thursday at U. S. Steel Yard with $2 Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft at the concession stand.
