Hinson Brilliant Again, Sets Franchise K's Record

Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (21-12) beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats (16-15) 7-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

Ryan Hinson became the Wingnuts' all-time leader in strikeouts (219) and allowed one earned run on five hits over eight innings to pick up the win.

Ryan Khoury walked on a full count leading off the bottom of the first. Jake Kahaulelio followed with a long, two-run home run to left field to give Wichita an early 2-0 lead.

Hinson faced runners on first and second with one out in the top of the second, but induced a double play ball off the bat of Zac Mitchell to end the inning. Beginning with Mitchell's at bat, Hinson retired 14 consecutive hitters, and set down the leadoff hitter in seven of the eight innings he started.

With two outs and no one on base in the second, David Amberson and Jared McDonald hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Khoury made it 3-0 with a line drive double to the left field wall.

The Wingnuts added three more in the bottom of the fifth. Kahaulelio reached on an infield single and moved to second on a passed ball. John Rodriguez singled up the middle to drive in Kahaulelio with the Wingnuts' fourth run. C.J. Ziegler was next and cracked a two-run homer to left-center.

Gary SouthShore scratched out their lone run in the seventh. Consecutive one-out singles from Cristian Guerrero, Craig Maddox, and Brian Kolb led to an RBI fielder's choice by Drew Martinez.

Ziegler drilled a home run to deep left on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh to re-extend Wichita's lead to six runs.

Hinson tied Derek Blacksher for the Wingnuts' strikeout record when he fanned Chase Tucker in the top of the sixth. The record-breaker came in the top of the eighth on Danny Pulfer--the final batter Hinson faced. Hinson is now just one win shy of tying Blacksher for first place in team history.

Andrew Aizenstadt worked a perfect top of the ninth to finish the game, including two strikeouts.

Eight different Wingnuts collected base hits, while Abel Nieves extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Aizenstadt was signed by Wichita prior to Wednesday's game. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-hander appeared in 10 games for the Wingnuts as a true rookie last year before having his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies' organization. Aizenstadt pitched in seven games for the Low-A South Atlantic League's Lakewood Blue Claws this spring.

The Wingnuts travel to Sioux City, IA for a four-game series against the Explorers beginning Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Justin Klipp makes the start against right-hander Andy Noga. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 92.7 KWME and worldwide at www.pressboxproductionsradio.com
