Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have regained first place in the American Association's North Division.

Friday night in St. Paul, the Goldeyes jumped out to a quick 3-0 first-inning lead, fell behind 5-3 and then scored three times in the seventh to come from behind and beat St. Paul 6-5 in front of 5,658 spectators at Midway Stadium.

With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 45-32 on the season, dropped St. Paul to 44-33 and took a one game lead in the North Division. Game 2 in this crucial three-game series goes Saturday night at Midway.

The Goldeyes started quickly once again. Leadoff man Price Kendall walked to start the game and then stole second. Brian Myrow walked and then Wes Long was safe on an error by the shortstop as Kendall scored. Luis Alen then singled to centre to score Myrow and Justin Bass singled to left to score Long. The Goldeyes had a 3-0 lead and appeared to be rolling.

But the Saints scored one in the first, one in the second and three in the fourth and carried a 5-3 advantage into the seventh when the Goldeyes exploded.

Luis Alen, who had three hits on the night, led off with a single, then Justin Bass singled and Lou Ott singled to drive in Alen. Then Ridge Carpenter singled to load the bases and Kendall delivered the dagger to St. Paul's heart with another single that scored Bass and Ott and the Goldeyes led 6-5.

Ian Thomas pitched a scoreless seventh, Aaron Hartsock pitched a scoreless eighth and Jamie Vermilyea picked up his 10th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Goldeyes reliever Chad Benefield (2-2, 5.03 ERA) got the win in relief of starter Ace Walker. St. Paul's reliever Jesse English (0-1, 10-12 ERA) suffered the loss.

Kody Kaiser's 22-game hitting streak came to an end as Kaiser went 0-for-5.

The Saints and Goldeyes play Game 2 of this important three game series on Saturday night at Midway Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290.
