August 5, 2011 - American Association (AA)
Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
EL PASO, Tx.- The Captains overcame an early 6-0 deficit to take a brief lead, but the Diablos offense proved too much Thursday night at Cohen Stadium, as El Paso beat Shreveport-Bossier 12-9 for the three-game sweep.
Diablos catcher Alberto Espinosa went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while first baseman Javier Brito added a 2-for-4 night with two runs and two RBIs, giving him six runs and eight RBIs in the series. The Diablos had nine extra base hits including eight doubles in the victory.
El Paso tagged Captains starter Robert Bono (0-1) for six runs on six hits in the bottom of the first including RBI doubles for Nelson Teilon, Espinosa, Chad Gabriel and Brian Joynt. Bono, who pitched for the Brockton Rox (CAN-AM) earlier this year, allowed nine runs (eight earned) on ten hits in 3.1 innings in his Captains debut. Bono walked two and struck out four.
The Captains got back into the game with two runs in the second and two more in the third. Mike Provencher's two-run single in the second made it 6-2. In the third, Robert Perry and Bryan Sabatella each came home on a dropped third strike wild pitch to Andres Rodriguez thrown by Diablos starter Alex Kaminski.
Shreveport-Bossier took the lead with four runs in the fourth. Trailing 7-4, Provencher came in to score on a wild pitch. Then Perry knocked a two-run single to tie the game. The Captains took the lead on a Bryan Sabatella RBI single.
But El Paso would come back in the very next half inning and never again relinquish the lead. Albenis Machado scored the tying run on an Espinosa ground out and Brito scored on shortstop Jonathan Johnson's fielding error to make it 8-7.
A trio of Diablos relievers would hold the Captains to one run on two hits over the final 5.1 innings. Sabatella doubled to lead off the seventh and scored on Andres Rodriguez's grounder to short to make it 10-9, but a two-run eighth for the Diablos would put the game away.
Machado led off the eighth with a double and scored on a Brito sacrfice fly off Hector Carrasco. Nelson Teilon reached on Uriak Marquez's fielding error at second base and scored on Espinosa's one-out single.
Two walks in the ninth put runners on first and second with two outs for the Captains, but Kyle Cremers (Sv, 1) struck out Rodriguez to end the game.
Captains centerfielder Perry went 2-for-4 with two runs in the loss. Sabatella was 3-for-5 with two runs and one batted in. Provencher was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
El Paso starter Kaminski gave up eight hits and eight runs in 3.2 innings. He allowed three walks and struck out three. Reliever Reyes Dorado (1-0) got the win, going 3.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out three and walking none.
With the loss, the Captains fall to 35-41 on the year, nine games out of the Wild Card with 24 to play. Shreveport-Bossier also falls to third place in the American Association South Division, 13 behind the Grand Prairie AirHogs and 0.5 behind Amarillo for second place in the division.
