St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints and Winnipeg Goldeyes have battled for the North Division lead all season long and the two teams came in tied atop the division, but a three-run seventh inning cost the Saints on Friday night losing 6-5 at Midway Stadium in front of 5,658 and dropping one game behind the Goldeyes for the North Division lead.

With the Saints leading 5-3 going to the seventh inning Saints reliever Jesse English gave up back-to-back singles to Jon Weber and Luis Alen. A walk to Justin Bass loaded the bases. Louis Ott made it 5-4 with a sacrifice fly to center. English gave up a single to Ridge Carpenter that loaded the bases once again. English left the game for Caleb Thielbar, who has been incredible in his last 15 appearances not allowing a run in 24.2 innings pitched. He gave up a two-run single to Price Kendall that gave the Goldeyes a one run lead they would never relinquish. The runs were all charged to English who allowed three runs in 0.2 of an inning. Theilbar extended his scoreless streak to 26.1 by pitching 1.2 scoreless.

The last time Saints starter Donald Brandt pitched was five days ago against the Goldeyes in Winnipeg and he gave up four runs in the first inning. On Friday night Brandt once again ran into trouble in the first. Kendall led off with a walk and with one out Brian Myrow walked. Wes Long then hit a sharp grounder that went under Frost's glove for an error and allowed Kendall to score making it 1-0. After a strikeout to Weber, Alen and Bass each knocked in a run with singles to make it 3-0. Brandt settled down after that going 5.2 innings allowing three unearned runs on five hits while walking a season high six and striking out five.

The Saints came storming back and it started in the first as Frost led off with a walk. He stole second and scored on a two-out single by Jason Cooper to make it 3-1.

In the second Jonathan Van Every hit his first homer since July 15, a solo shot to center, his 16th of the season and first of the night, to make it 3-2.

The comeback was complete in the fourth as Argelis Nunez led off with a double and with one out Richard Mercado tied the game with an RBI single. Van Every connected with his second homer of the game, a two-run blast to right, his 17th of the season and third multi-homer game of the season, to make it 5-3.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send LHP Edwin Walker (3-4, 4.31) to the mound and the Goldeyes are TBA. It is "Saints" Side Story: Jets vs. Northstars. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
