Wingnuts Win Another Nailbiter

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Sioux City Explorers 5-3 at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday night.

With the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the eighth, Josh Workman scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch from Explorers' reliever Jon Plefka. Workman opened the inning with a walk and took second on Jorge Delgado's groundball single through the left side. Edwin Bellorin laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. Plefka's wild pitch came on an 0-2 count with Peter Barrows at the plate.

Marcos Tabata worked a perfect bottom of the eighth for a second straight night, allowing the Wingnuts to add an insurance run in the top of the ninth. With two outs and nobody on base, Josh Horn lined a double to right-center field. Fighting back from an 0-2 count, Juan Richardson then singled on a line drive to center to score Horn and give Wichita a 5-3 advantage.

Josh Dew took over in the bottom of the ninth and pitched a one-two-three inning to earn his 15th save of the year.

The Wingnuts took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Delgado was retired on a groundball to third that scored Mike Conroy from third base.

With a Jose Duran on second and two outs in the top of the fifth, Richardson singled through the left side to make it 2-0 Wingnuts. After Workman singled to right, Delgado pulled a double to left-center that plated Richardson with the Wingnuts' third run.

Junior Guerra turned in another strong start, and kept the Explorers hitless over the first five and two-thirds innings. Derek Schermerhorn broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth.

Sioux City rallied to tie the game in the seventh, scoring three runs. Ray Serrano led off with a double to left-center and went to third on Brett Flowers' groundball single into left. Ryan Priddy lined a single to left field to score Serrano and cut the Wingnuts' lead to 3-1. Tyler Goodro doubled on a groundball down the third base line that scored Flowers and put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Brian Bistagne followed with a groundball to third. Priddy attempted to score the tying run, but was tagged out by Edwin Bellorin who blocked the plate. Jared Simon relieved Guerra and nearly escaped with the lead intact, but Dustin Jones beat out a potential double play groundball back to Simon. Simon Kept the game tied, striking out Derek Schermerhorn to end the inning.

Simon earned the win, working two-thirds of a scoreless inning.

Plefka took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits in two innings of relief.

Ty Marotz started for Sioux City and took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Marotz walked three and struck out three.

Richardson reached base five times with three hits and two walks. The Wingnuts totaled four doubles in the win.
