Erie SeaWolves News Release
The first place Erie SeaWolves crushed the New Britain Rock Cats in the rubber match of the three-game set at New Britain Stadium by a score of 13-3. The win improves the club to a season-high 17-games over .500.
The âWolves struck first in the top of the first inning. Pedro Cotto singled with one out to extend his hitting streak to 11-consecutive games. Mike Hollimon followed and reached on an error by centerfielder Brandon Roberts, putting runners on second and third for Jeff Larish. Larish grounded to first and the ball was booted by David Winfree allowing both runners to score for a 2-0 Erie lead. Larish picked up one RBI on the play and now has a league-leading 78.
Erie added a run in the top of the second as Kody Kirkland came to the plate with one out and slammed his 11th home run of the season for a 3-0 Erie lead. It was the first home run for Kirkland since July 12.
The Rock Cats got on the board in the bottom of the second, breaking an Erie streak of 14-consecutive scoreless innings pitched. Rashad Eldridge was hit by a pitch with an out and Felix Molina doubled him home making it 3-1 Erie. Winfree singled to put runners on the corners for Matt Allegra. Allegra doubled home Molina making it a one-run game at 3-2. The âCats tied the game on a Roberts single with two outs, erasing the 3-0 Erie lead.
The SeaWolves came right back in the next half inning. Larish stepped to the plate with one out and was hit by a pitch. Thomas singled to put two on for Steve Torrealba. Torrealba singled to right, scoring Larish, for a 4-3 Erie lead. Wilkin Ramirez lined a single down the left field line to plate Thomas for a 5-3 SeaWolves advantage. Kirkland followed and grounded back to the mound. On the play, the pitcher Josh Hill overthrew second and was charged with an error, the third of the game for New Britain, loading the bases for Nick McIntyre. McIntyre grounded out to first and picked up an RBI as Torrealba scored from third base. With two down and Will Rhymes batting, Hill delivered a wild pitch allowing Kirkland to score for a 7-3 Erie lead.
The âWolves would add to the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Larish walked for the 67th time this season with two outs to extend the inning. Thomas then singled, his third hit of the game, to put two on for Torrealba. Torrealba lined an opposite-field double down the right field line, plating Larish and Thomas for a 9-3 Erie advantage.
The âWolves again added to the lead in the seventh. Torrealba led off and was hit by a pitch. He would later score on a bases loaded single by Rhymes for a 10-3 Erie lead.
In the top of the eighth, Erie would go ahead by 10 runs. Thomas singled with two outs to extend the inning. The single for Thomas was his fourth in the game and it was his third four-hit game of the season. Torrealba walked to put two on for Ramirez. Ramirez slammed his second home run of the season. The three-run bomb put the âWolves ahead 13-3.
Bonine (12-5) worked six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. It was the seventh time this season in which Bonine has not allowed a walk in the game. Bonine is now the Eastern League's first 12-game winner.
