Connecticut Defenders News Release
For the second consecutive night the Akron Aeros offense was too much for the Connecticut Defenders. Behind a solid start by Aeros pitcher Chuck Lofgren, the Aeros provided all the offense they'd need, keep the Defenders bats at bay, and sweep the series with a 7-2 victory.
Brooks McNiven endured his second straight tough outing and Akron capitalized on his mistakes. Akron scored one in the top of the third inning to break the scoreless tie on an RBI single by 1B Jordan Brown. The Defenders came right back in the bottom of the frame and took the lead with an RBI single by OF Eugenio Velez and scored on a throwing error by C Wyatt Toregas as he tried to nail OF Pat Dobson at third base. The ball got away from 3B Rodney Choy Foo and Dobson came down the line score. After three full innings the Defenders led 2-1.
But the Defenders lead was short lived and they never got it back. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Aeros put up five runs in the top of the fifth inning, as all nine players in the lineup recorded an at-bat. The scoring effort included an RBI single by OF Brian Barton, RBI single by DH Michael Aubrey, RBI single by Choy Foo and a 2-run single off the bat of C Wyatt Toregas. The Aeros reclaimed the lead for good, 6-2 after five full innings.
The Defenders could not muster up any offense over the next few innings and Aeros pitching only faced 13 batters from the bottom of the fifth through the bottom of the eighth. After the Aeros added one more run in the top of the ninth on a Brown RBI double, ultimately three of four Defenders were retired in the ninth to secure the Akron victory 7-2.
Brooks McNiven (L, 6-5) took the loss after pitching just 4.2 innings, surrendering 6 runs, 10 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 1 batter. Chuck Lofgren (W, 10-6) picked up his tenth win on the season after pitching 6 innings, limiting the Defenders to 2 runs (1 earned), 2 hits, while walking 4 and striking out 6 batters. The Defenders were out-hit in the series 32-15. Eugenio Velez went 2 for 3 with an RBI, walk, and a stolen base in the loss. The Defenders open a three game set with the Erie Sea Wolves on Friday August 3rd at 7:05 p.m.
