JOHN HYNES TO COACH WESTERN CONFERENCE ALL-STARS
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced today that head coach John Hynes has been named one of the two coaches of the AHL's Western Conference All-Star Team in the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic Presented by Capital Blue Cross in Hershey, Pa on January 31.
Hynes officially clinched the honor on Saturday night when the Penguins locked up the best points percentage in the Eastern Conference as of the pre-determined deadline, the end of play on Sunday, January 9. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton begins the new week at 26-8-0-0 (.765), good for 52 points and the top spot in the entire AHL. Hynes is in his first season as Penguins bench boss after spending one year as the club's assistant under Todd Reirden.
Hynes is the third Penguins head coach, and fifth coach overall, to earn the honor of coaching some of the American Hockey League's top talent. Joe Mullen, along with assistant coach Al Sims, guided the PlanetUSA All-Stars in the 2006 RBK Hockey All-Star Classic in Winnipeg, Manitoba, while head coach Todd Richards, assisted by Dan Bylsma, coached the 2007 RBK Hockey PlanetUSA All-Stars to a 7-6 victory over the Canadian All-Stars in Toronto.
The American Hockey League has implemented a format of Eastern Conference against Western Conference, a change from the past several years of Canadian All-Stars battling against PlanetUSA.
Hershey's Giant Center is the host venue for the AHL Skills Competition, to be held on Sunday, January 30 at 3:00 pm. The 2011 AHL All-Star Classic Presented by Capital Blue Cross will then face off at 7:00 pm on Monday, January 31.
