Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans have a busy next few days ahead of them and it's not on the ice. The Amerks Reading Power Play program continues this week with a trio of visits from three different Amerks within in the next two days, in addition to the kickoff of the team's newly formed Speaker's Bureau campaign.
The Amerks Reading Power Play begins its 2011 slate tonight with a 6:30 p.m. visit from defenseman Paul Baier at the Rush Public Library (5977 East Henrietta Rd.). On Thursday, January 6th, veteran forward Chris Taylorwill make a late afternoon stop at the Newman Riga Public Library in Churchville (1 Village Park) at 4:00 p.m. before PJ Fenton concludes the day with a 6:30 p.m. appearance at the Ogden Public Library (269 Ogden Center Rd.
The Amerks will hit the ice again on Saturday, January 8th as the team heads to the southern tier for a 7:05 p.m. non-divisional matchup with the Binghamton Senators at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Tonight and Thursday night, however, the trio will showcase their reading prowess, not their on-ice skills. They will be joined by The Moose, as they teach kids about hockey and the importance of reading. The "Reading Power Play" involves players stopping by local libraries, reading to kids and giving a hockey demonstration. Each appearance also features a raffle for Amerk memorabilia and an autograph session by the visiting player and The Moose.
At each event, the Amerks will distribute ticket vouchers to each youth in attendance good for one complimentary ticket for any future Amerks home game. Additional discounted tickets in the 200-Ends can also be purchased for as little as $10.00 with the opportunity to upgrade to another section of choice.
The second half of "Reading Power Play" enters kids into a grand prize drawing. Youth participants fill out a form for every three books they read, which then qualifies them for an entry into the grand prize drawing. The two winners will receive grand prize packages that include dinner, suite tickets and the opportunity to make the ceremonial puck drop at the Amerks' Sunday, February 13th home game against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The "Reading Power Play" runs from Thursday, October 14th to Tuesday, January 25th. A complete reading program schedule will be available at the Amerks Guest Services Booth in the upper atrium lobby on game nights and online at amerks.com. For player or Moose appearances, please contact Warren Kosel at (585) 454-5335, ext. 3025.
The Amerks commence their Speaker's Bureau on Friday, January 7th at 1:30 p.m. at State Road Elementary in Webster. Baier will talk to the kids about how education played a role in his development as a professional athlete. Baier, who attended Brown University, will address the school assembly that includes over 550 students, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. Joining him will also be The Moose.
The Speaker's Bureau will focus on healthy living, team work, being active and physically fit and how lessons learned in sport can be applied to normal life. Orchestrated by an Amerks/Knighthawks community relations representative, the program offers a wide-variety of speakers, including players, coaches, senior management and broadcasters. Kids, educators and their parents can meet some of the most successful athletes in Rochester history. The Speaker's Bureau is also available to college and high school classes.
The list of speakers includes former NHL Coach of the Year and Amerks Senior Business Advisor to the President Ted Nolan, AHL and Amerks and Knighthawks Hall of Famer Jody Gage, Amerks Hall of Fame Broadcaster Don Stevens, Amerks and Knighthawks President Lewis Staats, and Amerks Head Coach Chuck Weber... to name a few.
If you are interested in having a Knighthawks or Amerks representative at your event, please call Shannon Burrows at (585) 454-5335, ext. 3051. At each event, the Amerks and Knighthawks will distribute a special ticket offer to watch two of Rochester's premiere sports franchises.
