
Fernandez Steals Home in the 8th to Defeat the HooksÃâÃÂ

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions executed a delayed double steal in the bottom of the eighth inning to steal the victory from the Corpus Christi Hooks. Juan Fernandez stole home to give San Antonio a 3-2 lead. It was his third stolen base of the year.
Coming into to Wednesday's game on a three-game losing streak, the Missions offense got to work in the first inning. Collecting four hits in the inning, the Mission scored two runs against Brandon Lawson. Eguy Rosario hit a lead-off triple. He scored on an RBI single from Jose Azocar. With two outs, Azocar scored on an RBI single from Kyle Overstreet.
The Missions had a chance for more runs in the bottom of the first inning but gambled it away. With Overstreet on first base, Allen Cordoba doubled into left field. Overstreet received the green light to try and score, but was thrown out at the plate. The Missions had a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Corpus Christi offense recorded two hits in the first inning against Osvaldo Hernandez. After that, they didn't record a hit until the fifth inning. In that inning they collected two base hits and scored their first run of the game. Grae Kessinger singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. He later scored on an RBI single from Ross Adolph.
The Hooks tied up the game with an eventful sixth inning. After a walk and two base hits, Corpus Christi had the bases loaded with nobody out. Hernandez was able to get the next batter out and hold the runners in place. A wild pitch from Hernandez allowed the tying run to score and the other two runners to advance into scoring position. After striking out the next batter. Carlos Belen was called in to relieve Hernandez. He retired Kessinger to end the threat. It was a 2-2 ballgame heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
After being held off the scoreboard for six innings, the Missions regain the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Juan Fernandez got the inning started by drawing a walk. He advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt. A groundout pushed Fernandez to third with two outs. Esteury Ruiz was hit by a pitch to extend the inning. Then the Missions executed a double steal with Fernandez stealing home to take a 3-2 lead.

With the win, San Antonio improves to 38-41 on the season

The Missions continue their six-game series with Corpus Christi on Thursday, August 5th. Right-hander Adrian Martinez (6-3, 2.20) is scheduled to start for the Missions. The Hooks have yet to determine their starting pitcher for Thursday night. First pitch from Nelson Wolff Stadium will be at 7:05 p.m.
