Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Storm Chasers hit three home runs, including two from catcher Freddy Fermin, but dropped the series opener 5-4 to the RailRiders. The game was Fermin's first multi-HR of his career.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (62-55) leads the series 1-0, while Omaha (55-62) leads the all-time series 7-6, dating back to 1989 during the Triple-A alliance.

Miguel Andújar started the scoring with a home run off right-hander Max Castillo in the first for the RailRiders. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the second to open a 2-0 lead.

Fermin hit his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning, a solo shot that extended his on-base streak to 16 games and his hit streak to eight games.

The RailRiders added a run in the third on a Ben Rortvedt sacrifice fly before a two-run home run in the fourth from Armando Alverez to put the RailRiders ahead 5-1 after four innings of play.

To start the bottom of the fourth, third baseman Nate Eaton hit his second double of the night on his second plate appearance. Eaton rejoined the Chasers yesterday after spending the last couple weeks with the Royals.

Fermin, in the seventh, hit his second home run of the night, his first multi-homer game of his career and the 13th multi-home run game by a Storm Chaser this season.

In his Werner Park debut, Nick Loftin hit a two-run homer to cut Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's lead to just one run in the eighth inning. Right fielder Brewer Hicklen was also hit by a pitch in the eighth inning, extending his on-base streak to 25 games, the sixth longest by an Omaha player in the Storm Chasers era.

In the bottom of ninth, designated hitter Dairon Blanco walked before stealing his 32nd base of the season, now in a tie for the most in the International League. Blanco moved to third on a groundout but was stranded 90 feet from home to end the game.

Omaha's bullpen kept Scranton/Wilkes-Barre hitless through the final four innings, striking out six batters with two walks.

The Storm Chasers and RailRiders are set to play game two on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone. Omaha is set to sent right-hander Daniel Mengden (6-4, 4.45) to the mound while Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is scheduled to start Sean Boyle.
