Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets saw an early lead evaporate in a 6-4 loss to the Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets scored three runs on four hits in the first inning but managed only one run and four hits in the next eight innings.
Syracuse (51-68) jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally. Mark Vientos started the rally with a two-out single. Daniel Palka followed with a two-run home run to straightaway center field that gave the Mets a 2-0 lead. Travis Blankenhorn then hit a home run to right field that put Syracuse up, 3-0, as the Mets went back-to-back with home runs. This is the fifth time this season that Syracuse has hit back-to-back homers.
Worcester (60-59) scored its first run in the top of the fourth. Jaylin Davis led off with a walk. Two batters later, Yohan Mieses doubled to the left-field corner, scoring Davis to trim the Mets lead to two, 3-1.
The Red Sox came all the way back in the top of the fifth. Cam Cannon singled, Connor Wong singled, and Abraham Almante walked to load the bases. Enmanuel Valdez followed with a groundout to first base that scored Cannon to make it a 3-2 ballgame and advanced Wong to third and Almante to second. After Davis struck out, Triston Casas grounded a ball to second base. Mets second baseman Gosuke Katoh made an excellent sliding stop, but Katoh made an errant throw to first, allowing Wong and Almonte to score, giving Worcester a 4-3 lead.
The Mets responded in the bottom of the fifth though. Dominic Smith blooped a one-out double down the left-field line. Then Vientos singled to right-center field, scoring Smith to knot the game up, 4-4.
Worcester struck right back in the sixth. Christin Stewart led off with a home run over the right-field wall, pushing the Red Sox back in front, 5-4. Nick Sogard followed with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Wong double to right field to extend the Worcester lead to two, 6-4.
Syracuse put runners on the corners with one out in the seventh, but a fly out and a groundout ended the frame. The Mets proceeded to go down 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth innings to end the game.
The Mets and Red Sox continue their six-game series with the third game of the series on Thursday night. Right-hander Harol González is slated to start on the mound for Syracuse. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
