CHARLESTON, S.C. - Anderson Feliz propelled the Charleston RiverDogs to a doubleheader sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds in South Atlantic League action Sunday evening in front of a crowd of 2,862 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Feliz cracked an RBI double to account for the winning run in game one's 2-0 victory, and spanked his fourth homer of the season to decided game two's 5-4 final outcome.
Charleston secured a series victory with the sweep and improved to 9-9 this half and 35-53 overall, while Delmarva dropped to 7-11 and 42-46.
Feliz did not get the start in game two of the double dip, but entered for Ramon Flores in the fourth inning and made his impact felt in the fifth. The 19-year old Dominican second baseman launched a solo shot deep over the right field fence off Delmarva starter Luis Noel (5-10), giving the RiverDogs a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Charleston starter Steve Evarts (1-2) battled through 5.0 innings to take the win, allowing the four runs on five hits and four walks, while sprinkling in three punchouts. Aaron Dott locked down the victory with 2.0 scoreless relief innings to garner his first save of the campaign.
Noel labored through 4.2 innings, yielding the five runs on nine hits, including the Feliz homer and Kyle Higashioka's second long ball of the season.
Delmarva's Jarret Martin (4-5) and Charleston's Zach Nuding (6-6) hooked up in a dandy of a pitcher's duel in the opener of the twin bill.
Nuding held the Shorebirds hitless through the opening four frames, while Martin limited the RiverDogs to just one hit during the same stretch. Charleston broke through with two fifth inning markers, however, to support Nuding and allow him to collect his first win in over a month.
Jose Toussen worked a one-out walk, and moved to second on an Eduardo Sosa single to set the stage for Feliz. Feliz stepped to the plate and drilled a RBI double to the left field corner, scoring Toussen and bringing Sosa in as well when Delmarva right fielder Michael Planeta made an errant throw.
Nuding was brilliants in collecting his fifteen outs, allowing only the one base knock and two walks, while striking out five opponents. Mark Montgomery entered in the seventh and preserved the win, keeping his save mark a perfect 4-for-4 by striking out a pair and getting a pop out from Planeta to end it.
