Grasshoppers Spring Past Gnats 3-1 Sunday

SAVANNAH, GA - The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to spring to a 3-1 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats Sunday at Historic Grayson Stadium. Greensboro (9-9/49-39) took three of four games from Savannah, handing the Gnats (13-5/52-35) just their second home series loss of 2011. The Gnats are 8-2-2 in their 12 home series in 2011.

In a 1-1 game in the ninth, Savannah reliever Ronny Morla issued a pair of one-out walks to LF James Wooster and C Jacob Realmuto. The next two Greensboro batters - SS Daniel Black and CF Isaac Galloway - each singled into right field scoring Wooster and Realmuto on consecutive plays to give the 'Hoppers a 3-1 advantage. Morla took the loss to fall to 1-1.

With the Gnats trailing 1-0 entering the sixth inning, Aderlin Rodriguezevened the score with a solo home run to left field. It was his team-leading 10th of the year. Rodriguez finished 2-for-4.

The Grasshoppers began the game's scoring with an unearned run off Savannah starter Ryan Fraser in the first inning. For the second straight start, Fraser completed seven innings. He fanned five and walked two.

Greensboro reliever Michael Brady earned the win for holding the Gnats scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Gnats had the bases loaded with one out in both the fifth and seventh innings, but did not score in either frame.

The Gnats are off on Monday, and begin a seven-game road trip in Lexington, Kentucky on Tuesday evening. RHP Taylor Whitenton (4-1, 2.69) will take on the Lexington Legends' LHP Alex Sogard (1-3, 4.40) Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. The broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 7 pm.
