Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD- On Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium the Hagerstown Suns (52-36, 12-6) finished off a four-game sweep of the West Virginia Power (41-44, 6-12), winning 8-2. The Suns now own a (7-2) season head-to-head record with the Power after garnering their fourth sweep of the 2011 season. Suns LHP Paul Applebee, although not factoring into the decision, tossed 5.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits without walking a batter and fanning three.
West Virginia RHP Tyler Waldron (6-5), the losing pitcher of record, made it through 5.0 innings with just one run allowed, but ran into trouble in the 6th stanza in which he allowed three runs, and more adversity in the 7th frame. Waldron finished with seven runs allowed, six earned on three walks and seven hits.
The Suns scored with a run in the 1st frame on an RBI groundball to third base by C David Freitas, which plated the double of 3B Blake Kelso.
The Power pushed across a pair of runs in the 3rd inning on an RBI triple to deep right center field by 2B Andy Vasquez, brining home 3B Eric Avila, who singled to center field, and SS Drew Maggi, who also singled back up the middle.
Against Waldron, down 2-1, the Suns leaped out with three runs in the 6th on a bases loaded three-RBI double from DH Kevin Keyes, who went 2-for-4, with one run, a double, and 5 RBI.
An inning later, the Suns blasted four runs courtesy of a two-RBI single by Keyes off RHP Brooks Pounders through the left side of the infield plating Kelso's fielder's choice and 2B Adrian Sanchez, who walked, before SS Jason Martinson crushed a two-run double off the center field barrier. Freitas and Keyes came in to score.
Suns RHP Matt Swynenberg (2-0), the winning pitcher, tossed 3.1 scoreless innings and allowed two hits, while striking out two.
Hagerstown LHP Chris Manno finished off the win with two consecutive strikeouts in the 9th inning.
Hagerstown will open their four game road series with the Augusta Greenjackets on Tuesday, July 12th. The Suns will visit the Greenjackets for a 7:05pm first pitch.
