Rome, GA -The Greenville Drive defeated the Rome Braves 8-5 Sunday afternoon at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 1,906. Greenville avoids the series sweep and the loss snaps the Braves four game winning streak

After only putting up one run last night the Braves bats got going early this afternoon. Matt Lipka walked to lead off the bottom of the first. Tommy La Stella moved Lipka over to second with a sacrifice bunt and Edward Salcedo roped an RBI double to bring him home. Hot hitting Chris Garcia followed up with an RBI single that plated Salcedo to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.

Greenville responded in the top of the second when Xander Bogaerts (6) went deep with a two run homerun that scored Henry Ramos and tied the game 2-2. Bogaerts cashed in on a second chance at the plate after his at bat was extended on the previous pitch when Evan Gattis dropped a pop up in foul territory. In the top of the fourth the Drive once again got on the board with the power of the long ball when Brandon Jacobs (11) hit a solo shot to give Greenville a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh the Drive added two insurance runs thanks to RBI singles by Matty Johnson and Drew Hedman to give Greenville a 5-2 cushion. Rome would get a run back in the bottom of the inning after David Rohm laced a one out triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Kyle Rose to narrow the gap to 5-3. Greenville added to their lead in the top of the eighth when Felix Sanchez delivered an RBI single and Brandon Jacobs followed with a bases loaded two RBI double to extend the lead to 8-3.

Rome managed to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth after a pair of doubles by Evan Gattis and Edward Salcedo but the scoring stopped and Dennis Neuman shut the door in the ninth.

Miguel Celestino (7-4) earns the win for Greenville and Aaron Northcraft (2-6) takes the loss for Rome. Dennis Neuman (5) earns the save.

Rome boards the bus for a nine day road trip before returning home for back to back series with Delmarva and Kannapolis. For ticket information, contact the Rome Braves at 706-378-5144 or log onto www.romebraves.com.
