BlueClaws Split Doubleheader Saturday

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws lost game 1 of their doubleheader to the Kannapolis Intimidators 8-5 on Saturday. Lakewood bounced back and took game 2 by a final of 3-2 behind another solid start by Jesse Biddle. Both games were scheduled to be 7 innings in length, but game 1 ended up going 9 innings until a winner emerged.

Lakewood led 5-4 heading into the 7th inning of game 1, but couldn't hold on to win. Philadelphia Phillies reliever Brad Lidge was making his 3rd rehab appearance of the week with Lakewood, and he ended up blowing the save as he allowed 3 hits and 1 run to score to tie it at 5-5. Kannapolis eventually won it with a 3 RBI double by Drew Lee with 2 outs in the 9th off BlueClaws reliever Chase Johnson. Offensively for Lakewood, Miguel Alvarez was 2-5 with 2 doubles and an RBI in game 1, and Travis Mattair was 2-4 as well.

Game 2 was all about Jesse Biddle as he allowed just 3 hits an 1 run while fanning 8 over 6 innings to collect his 4th win of the year. Cameron Rupp was 2-3 with a big 2 RBI single and Domingo Santana went 2-2 in game 2 also. Jim Murphy walked all 3 time he went to the plate, and scored 2 of Lakewood's 3 runs. Colby Shreve pitched the 7th to close it out for Lakewood and pick up his 1st save of the year.

The series is now 2-1 in favor of the BlueClaws heading into Sunday's finale of the 4 game set. Righty Garett Claypool (3-3, 3.01 ERA) will start for Lakewood and Righty Matt Heidenreich (5-5, 4.56 ERA) will start for Kannapolis. First Pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm on Sunday.
