Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – One night after pouring in eight goals against the San Diego Gulls, the Fresno Falcons managed just one goal in a 2-1 loss to San Diego on Wednesday at Selland Arena in front of 4,373 fans.

San Diego's Clayton Read followed-up his two-goal performance from an evening ago with his 16th of the year unassisted 2:55 into the hockey game to give the Gulls a 1-0 lead heading to the second.

The teams were scoreless in the middle frame until time was ticking down to end the period and Cory Murphy spun a wrist shot that deflected off the stick of a Gulls player into the net with less than a second to play.

Tied at one as the third began, special teams proved the difference. San Diego's Trevor Sherban scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 4:35 when his slapshot from the left point beat Fresno goaltender Mark Gowan to the blocker side. At 11:25, the Falcons had a full two minutes on a five-on-three advantage but failed to convert. They were able to pull Gowan in the waning moments and generated some pressure in the Gulls' zone but never tallied the equalizer.

The loss drops the Falcons to 24-16-5 and 53 points. They finish a six-game home stand this Friday against the Anchorage Aces. The 7:30 p.m. start features a free Falcons baseball cap to the first 1,500 fans. Tickets are still available at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
