ROUND ROCK (May 11, 2006) - After more than six years of award-winning service at The Dell Diamond, Round Rock Express Head Groundskeeper Dennis Klein is heading back to his roots with the Texas Rangers.
Klein, who worked as an assistant groundskeeper for Texas from 1996-1999, will join the Rangers at Ameriquest Field on May 22 as the team's new Director of Grounds. His final game with Round Rock will be Thursday, May 18 when the Express return to the Dell Diamond to host the Tucson Sidewinders.
Klein's replacement will be named at a later date.
"Dennis has done a fantastic job and we're excited for him and his new opportunity," Round Rock president Jay Miller said. "Through his work and various awards, he's helped make The Dell Diamond one of premier minor league complexes in the country."
After pulling tarp for the Rangers while still in high school at Arlington Lamar, Klein went on to Stephen F. Austin University. He eventually landed back with the Rangers for four years before joining the Express as the Head Groundskeeper for the team's inaugural 2000 season.
For the next five years, Klein was named the Double-A Sports Turf Manager of the Year. Klein was also honored as the Triple-A Sports Turf Manager of the Year for 2005, the same year the Dell Diamond was honored as the Triple-A Field of the Year.
Under Klein, The Dell Diamond was named the Double-A Texas League Field of the Year for five consecutive seasons and was the Double-A Playing Surface of the Year in 2002 and 2004.
Klein also played a major role in the Express' streak of more than 440 regular season and post season home games without a rainout.
