Round Rock Express News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Round Rock Express (59-47) starter Jake Brigham turned in his sixth straight quality start but the offense managed just three hits in a 5-0 loss to the Memphis Redbirds (51-55) Thursday night at AutoZone Park.
Memphis used five doubles and hit .400 (4-for-10) with runners in scoring position as the E-Train fell for the second straight night.
Brigham held the Redbirds scoreless through the first four innings but Memphis capitalized on the right-hander in the bottom of the fifth.
After retiring the first batter of the frame, Brigham allowed the third double of the night off the Memphis bats as center fielder Thomas Pham pulled into second base. An errant pickoff attempt moved Pham over to third before he crossed the plate on a RBI single by second baseman Kolton Wong. Left fielder Chad Huffman followed with yet another double before first baseman Jamie Romak brought Wong home on a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0. The final run of the inning came around to score when right fielder Adron Chambers knocked Huffman in with a single as the Redbirds jumped ahead 3-0.
Brigham finished off the inning and worked his way through the sixth, allowing just the three runs en route to logging his sixth quality start of the season.
Right-hander Justin Miller entered the game out of the Round Rock bullpen in the seventh but he was not able to shut down the Memphis offense, allowing a run when Huffman knocked in Wong with his second double of the evening.
As the Express offense continued to struggle, failing to record a hit for four consecutive innings, reliever Cory Burns worked the eighth for Round Rock, allowing an unearned run that made the score 5-0.
Designated hitter Manny Ramirez doubled with two outs in the ninth but was stranded on second when the final out was recorded. Ramirez's double was the lone hit after the fourth inning and just the third on the night for the Express, joining first baseman Mike Bianucci's two-out double in the second and third baseman Yangervis Solarte's single in the fourth.
Brigham (4-2) suffered the loss while southpaw Tyler Lyons (6-1) picked up the victory by holding Round Rock to just two hits over 7.0 scoreless innings.
The Express returns home to take on the Redbirds for four games at Dell Diamond starting Friday, July 26 at 7:05 p.m. Round Rock will send right-hander Evan Meek (5-4, 3.65 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. Friday will also feature the return of Budweiser Friday Fireworks as the Central Texas sky lights up with a spectacular pyrotechnic display following the conclusion of the game.
