
Everblades grab big win with 3-2 shootout victory over Gwinnett

DULUTH, GA - The Florida Everblades (31-16-3) earned two big points in the standings with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators (34-11-6) on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
In a classic playoff type game, each team tallied a first period goal to open the scoring. The Gladiators broke the scoreless tie when Scott Kelman jammed a shot past Everblades net-minder Kevin Nastiuk at 5:24 of the period. The Everblades however responded when Dustin Johner ripped a wrist shot into the upper right corner of the net at 12:50 tying the game at one.
After a scoreless second period, the Everblades grabbed their first lead of the night when Steve Saviano took a bank pass off the left boards and chipped a shot past Berkhoel at 9:26. The lead stood until the final five minutes of regulation when the Gladiators battled back to tie the game at two when Derek Nesbitt lifted a shot past Nastiuk at 15:19, sending the game to overtime.
In an overtime period dominated by the Everblades, who out-shot Gwinnett 7-1, neither team scored, sending the contest into a shootout. In the shootout, the Everblades scored on their first three attempts with goals by Saviano, Dan Sisca, and Kevin Bergin. Gwinnett answered with goals in the third and fourth rounds by Milan Gajic and Kelman, but Phil Aucoin sealed the game for the Everblades with a fifth round goal.
In goal, Nastiuk picked up the win for the Everblades by turning away 34 of 36 shots in regulation and overtime to raise his record to 5-2-1. Berkhoel earned a tie in the standings after allowing the two goals on 43 shots by the Everblades, which brought his record to 4-1-1.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 0-for-3, while the Gladiators closed out the game 0-for-6.
The Everblades return to action on Sunday, February 19 when they take on the Columbia Inferno at 5:05 p.m. from the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. Sunday's game can be heard via the internet only by visiting www.floridaeverblades.com.
