Evansville Otters News Release

(MARION, Illinois) - The Evansville Otters lead early, trailed in the middle innings, and came back for an 11-7 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners on Saturday night at Rent One Park.

Evansville took a 5-0 lead as the team batted around in the second inning against starting pitcher Shawn Joy. Designated hitter Chad Salem hit a grand slam, the first of his professional career, and shortstop Greg Fontenot followed with an RBI single a few batters later. It was the fifth career home run for Salem in just 14 games. The lead was only short-lived though as Southern Illinois rallied back to score four runs in the third inning.

Down 5-4, the Miners tied the game in the next inning when outfielder Ken Gregory hit a two run single to center field.

For the first time in the game, Evansville found themselves trailing but the Otters surged back ahead. First baseman Steve Caseres tied the score and took the lead on a two-run single and outfielder Troy Frazier followed with another single to bring home two more additional runs.

The bullpen held the lead the rest of the way as Evansville would go on to win 11-7.

Both starters did not factor into the decision. The win goes to pitcher Adam Wisniewski (2-1) who tossed a scoreless inning in relief. The losing pitcher is righty Eric Draxton (2-3) who gave up three runs while only recording an out.

Southern Illinois drops to 58-37 and will be denied a chance to win 60 games for back to back seasons. Evansville improves to 38-57 this season and has a chance to tie the Florence Freedom tomorrow for fifth place in the Western Division.

The series and season wind to a close on Sunday night when the Otters look to end the year with a sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT as left-hander Matt Zielinski (2-2, 2.95 Earned Run Average) will start for Evansville and he will be opposed by righty Ryan Zink (7-6, 5.17 ERA).
