Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI-The Traverse City Beach Bums' couldn't muster enough offense as a two-run single from Lake Erie Crushers catcher Joel Collins helped them defeat the Beach Bums in the 2011 regular season finale' in front of 5,089 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 3-1 in 10 innings.
Tonight's loss sends the Lake Erie Crushers into the 2011 Frontier League Playoffs to play the Joliet Slammers on Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field.
The score remain tied all the way until the seventh inning as Traverse City stranded the bases loaded with nobody out in the second inning, and first baseman Jeff Flagg launched a deep fly ball to left field, only to have a stiff wind knock down the baseball and allow Lake Erie left fielder Kellen Kulbacki to make the catch. The Crushers got on the board in the seventh inning when Kulbacki delivered an RBI-single to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead.
In the eighth, it was Flagg who redeemed himself by launching a solo home run which barely stayed fair down the right field line to tie the game at one.
The score stayed the same until the tenth inning. While the Beach Bums went without a base hit after Flagg's homer, Collins came to the plate with the bases loaded against Beach Bums closer Scott Mueller. The former farmhand of the Toronto Blue Jays lifted a soft fly ball down the right field line that fell in front of Beach Bums right fielder Matt Brown to score two runs, giving Lake Erie the runs they needed to win the ballgame and send themselves to the 2011 Frontier League Playoffs.
Mueller (3-3) suffered his third and final loss in 2011 after allowing two runs in the tenth inning while Lake Erie reliever Chris Allen (4-2) earned his fourth win after pitching a scoreless inning in the contest. The Beach Bums fall to 51-45 while the Crushers improve to 51-44 and end the season advancing to the playoffs as the 2011 Wild Card.
