Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL - Eric Williams drove in a run with an RBI double in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and the River City Rascals held on for a 1-0 win against the Gateway Grizzlies Saturday night at GCS Ballpark.
River City's victory was their 67th of the season, moving them one-win away from the Frontier League single season wins record, set by Windy City in 2007. The Rascals will try to pick up the monumental win on Sunday night in the series finale against Gateway ace right-hander Mark Brackman, who has the lowest ERA in the league at 1.93.
Rookie right-hander Jordan Cudney was brilliant in his first professional start for the Grizzlies on Saturday. Cudney threw six scoreless innings, striking out a career-high eight batters.
River City (67-27) starter Zach Sterner threw just as well, tossing five scoreless innings, striking out five.
After getting hits from Joe Agreste in the first and Case Rigby in the second, Gateway (39-55) went hitless until the eighth inning when Brian Harris blooped a single to left field.
Richard Barrett (4-4) suffered the loss for the Grizzlies, giving up the Williams RBI double in the eighth inning.
The Grizzlies conclude their season on Sunday night against the Rascals at 6:05 CT. The final home game of the season, also known as the âGreatest Night in Baseball', is full of fun for people of all ages.
"This is a spectacular night of entertainment", said Grizzlies General Manager Steve Gomric. "We are bringing back all that the Grizzlies do best throughout the season and putting it into one night."
"Face painters, magicians, car shows, inflatables and carnival rides. Then we are giving away 27 prizes to our fans for the 27 outs the Rascals will make that night. Top it off with the 4,000 rolls of toilet paper to T.P. the ballpark and a fireworks display 2 ½ times bigger than any display we done this year. If we were doing this in North Korea, I would probably get arrested for letting people have this much fun!"
