(MARION, Illinois) - Pinch hitter Greg Alexander hit a two-run go-ahead single in the top of the ninth inning and Evansville held on for the 6-4 win against the Southern Illinois Miners on Sunday night.
Reliever Patrick Crider also set the Frontier League single season record for most appearances (55) with a scoreless inning and also became the winning pitcher as well.
The victory completes a weekend sweep of the Southern Illinois Miners and moves the Evansville Otters into a tie for fifth place in the Western Division to end the season.
Evansville rallied from a two run deficit for a lead. Infielder Ryan Still tied the game on a single and outfielder Jose Hernandez handed Evansville the lead with a sacrifice fly. Steve Caseres added an RBI double later in the inning as the Otters pulled ahead 4-2.
Southern Illinois would come back to tie the game though with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings respectively.
The game remained a 4-4 tie late into the night as pitcher Matt Zielinski threw seven innings for Evansville to keep the score even.
Defensive plays aided Evansville's effort to keep the game tied. Shortstop Jared Jordan threw out a baserunner who went to far around third on a groundball to the left side of the infield and catcher Phil Britton started an 8th inning double play on a bunt that landed on home plate.
The hit from Alexander propelled Evansville to the 6-4 lead in the 9th inning and closer Mark Willinsky (3rd save) pitched a scoreless inning in relief to secure the series sweep.
Evansville ends the season with a record of 39-57 after finishing the second half with a record above the .500 mark (25-23).
