(Loves Park, IL) - The Rockford RiverHawks (37-59) smacked three home runs on their way to a 10-3 victory over the Joliet Slammers (56-40) in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.
Joliet took the early lead in the last game of the regular season when Josh Flores singled to start the first inning. He stole second base and a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out. One out later a Kris Kasarjian grounder scored Flores to give the Slammers the 1-0 edge.
But back-to-back homers from Evan Button and Jeremy Richter in the second inning off Andrew Moss (5-6) gave Rockford the lead for good. They would tack on three unearned runs in the third inning. With two outs and nobody on, Moss walked Matt Greener. An error by Reid Chenworth on pick-off attempt moved Greener to second. He would score when Kris Kasarjian dropped a fly ball off the bat of Michael Hur. Luis Parache smacked a home run and it was 5-1 Rockford.
Joliet was unable to capitalize on five walks issued by Rockford starter Kevin Patterson (2-3) as the lefty went five innings, giving up only one run to pick up the victory.
Moss' final inning was the fourth as Rockford scored two more runs. David Cooper doubled in a run and Greener contributed a RBI grounder.
After Chuck Lukanen worked a scoreless fifth, Chris Pack surrendered three runs in the sixth inning as Rockford went up 10-1.
Joliet did get a couple of runs across in the seventh but it was too little too late. Sean Estand and Ben Hewett picked up RBI singles in the frame.
The Slammers will host the Lake Erie Crushers in the first round of the Frontier League playoffs starting on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Central Time. "Captain" Jake Renshaw (13-4, 3.09 ERA) will take the mound for the Slammers. The Slammers are giving away a souvenir program and after the game there will be fireworks.
