Last Time Out...
The Joliet Slammers put away the Rockford RiverHawks early as they scored nine runs in the first inning on their way to a 14-1 victory Friday night. Josh Flores and David Fox both smacked two home runs and Jake Renshaw went five shutout innings to pick up his league-leading 13th victory of the season. Fox finished with six RBI on the night. Meanwhile, Brian Fowler made his return from the disabled list to pitch the final four innings to pick up the save. It was Fowler's first professional relief appearance and his first professional save. Kyle Maunus pounded out four hits and scored three runs in the win. Meanwhile Rockford could not manage much offense as they only tallied four hits without drawing a walk. Slammers' pitching struck out seven batters in the game. Meanwhile Joliet's offense drew seven walks and struck out only twice.
For Starters Game One...
Rookie Jeremy Tietze is making his third professional start and is coming off a victory over the Washington Wild Things on August 28. He went five innings, scattering five hits, and giving up two runs. Tietze walked two and struck out two in the start. He's made four appearances against Rockford this year and is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in five innings of work.
For Starters Game Two...
Andrew Moss is coming off a no-decision against the Windy City ThunderBolts on August 30 as he went six innings, giving up three runs on three hits. Moss walked five and struck out five in the start. Against Rockford this season Moss is 1-1 with a 1.32 ERA in two starts. The highlight of Moss' season was when he threw a no-hitter on July 27 against the Lake Erie Crushers. The Cardinals made Moss their 35th round draft pick in 2009. The Lincoln University product has excelled at multiple levels in affiliated baseball. Moss' strikeout to walk ratio has been stellar, including 61 K's to only 23 BB's in 2010 with the low-A Batavia Muckdogs. He has a career 11-5 record with a 3.15 ERA in the minor leagues. He started 2011 with the Quad City River Bandits of the Midwest League before signing with the Slammers.
Let's play two!
This is the fourth doubleheader of the season for Joliet. They've split two and swept one, with their one sweep coming against Rockford.
Going yard...
Josh Flores became the first player in Slammers history to hit two home runs in a single inning Friday night in the first against Rockford. Hit men... Joliet's 20 hits Friday night matched their highest hit total in one game this season.
Going for the season series victory...
Joliet is currently 6-4 against Rockford this season. If they can win this series it will be their eighth season series win of the year. Only Traverse City, Windy City, and Florence have taken the season series from Joliet
League honors...
Bart Zeller earned the Frontier League's Manager of the Year award and Ryan Quigley was named a post-season all-star. In addition, General Manager John Dittrich and President Bill Waliewski earned Frontier League Executive of the Year honors.
Going for a record...
The Slammers need two more victories to match the Lake Erie Crushers for the most regular season wins in Frontier League history by an expansion team.
Getting on base...
Brad Netzel has reached base safely in 32 straight games, the longest such streak for a Joliet player this season.
