Iowa Cubs News Release

TACOMA, WA - Phillip Evans crushed a go-ahead homer in the ninth to propel the Iowa Cubs (59-52) to a 5-4 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers (51-60), Friday at Cheney Stadium.

Ian Miller led off the bottom of the first with a double, leading to the game's first run on a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Trent Giambrone opened the second with a single and P.J. Higgins followed with a double to trigger an early comeback. Donnie Dewees singled in one to tie the game and Dixon Machado skied a sac fly to give Iowa the 2-1 edge.

The I-Cubs built a 4-1 lead in the fourth as Higgins started the inning with a triple. Without an out in the frame, Johnny Field ran out an infield single before Dewees knocked in the pair with a double to give the outfielder his second and third RBI of the game.

A run in the sixth and two in the seventh for the Rainiers worked the game back to a 4-4 tie. The lock remained until the ninth when Evans blasted a ball over the wall in left for the game winner.

Alec Mills gave Iowa its third consecutive quality start, allowing three runs through 6.1 frames. Mills didn't walk a batter for the second straight start and struck out four. Brad Wieck (W, 2-1) gave up one earned run through 1.2 innings in his Cubs organization debut. The lefty was tagged with two hits and struck out two. Dakota Mekkes (S, 5) closed the game to earn his first save since June 16.
