San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - For the second straight night the San Antonio Missions and Fresno Grizzlies found themselves deadlocked in a scoreless tie after nine innings of baseball and for the second straight night the Missions emerged victorious in extra innings.
Hernán Pérez laced the game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the 12th to secure the 3-2 come-from-behind win. Trailing 2-1 entering the 12th, the first two Missions to come to the plate were retired. Cory Spangenberg then muscled a base hit to shallow right field to bring home the game-tying run from second base. David Freitas worked a walk before Pérez smashed the decisive single.
Raudy Reed put the Grizzlies in front 1-0 in the 10th as he scorched a triple into the left center field gap. The lead was short-lived as the Missions tied the game in the home half of the frame. Troy Stokes Jr. came within inches of ending the game with a grand slam but had to settle for a sacrifice fly
The win came on the heels of a 1-0, 10-inning victory in the series opener Friday night. Zach Brown continued the superb string of recent success for Missions starting pitchers. Brown turned in his best outing of the season as Fresno scattered just four hits against the right-hander over 6.0 scoreless innings while going down on strikes seven times, which matched a season-high for Brown. Over the last six games Missions starters have allowed just four runs in 27.2 innings.
Jake Faria and Ray Black each made their Missions debuts on the night and both logged perfect innings. Black fanned a pair of Grizzlies in the eighth. Luke Barker struck out the side in the ninth and surrendered a go-ahead triple to Read in the 10th. Deolis Guerra tossed the final two innings for the Missions to pick up his third win of the season.
Missions pitchers held opponents scoreless for 20.0 consecutive innings from ninth inning of their game on August 1 through the ninth inning of Saturday's game.
The Missions and Grizzlies continue their four-game series against Sunday night at Wolff Stadium. Right-hander Thomas Jankins (10-3, 4.20) is scheduled to start for the Missions against left-hander Ben Braymer (0-4, 8.53) for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
