Bowie, Md. - The Baysox defense committed four errors that led to six unearned runs as the team fell to the Trenton Thunder 10-6 Friday evening in front of the US Naval Academy plebe summer class.

The Baysox struggled on defense early, committing back-to-back errors to start the game, and were never able to dig out of the hole. After trailing by as many as six runs, they cut the deficit to three runs before committing two more errors in the eighth inning that led to three more unearned runs.

"We didn't get out of the gate too well," Manager Gary Kendall said. "A couple miscues defensively got them on the board. As bad as things were, I like how we came back to make it a game. We had some opportunities - one with the bases loaded and less than two outs - you get a couple hits there and suddenly it's a tighter game than it should be."

Both starting pitchers were striking out batters at an extreme rate early in the game. Baysox starter Eddie Gamboa struck out a season high seven batters despite recording just 11 outs and Trenton starter Vidal Nuno struck out nine batters through five innings. The Baysox offense went on to strike out a total of 13 times.

Trenton got off to a fast start against Gamboa. Third baseman Ty Kelly committed fielding errors on consecutive plays to start the game and put runners on the corners with no outs. Addison Maruszak plated one run with a sacrifice fly and Zoilo Almonte followed with a two-run home run to right field to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead.

The Thunder added another run in the second inning. JR Murphy hit a lead off double to center field and scored when Jose Pirela hit a two-out single to left field to make the score 4-0.

The Baysox got one run back in the bottom of the second inning against Nuno. Designated hitter Caleb Joseph hit a one-out triple to right field and scored when right fielder Ronnie Welty grounded out to make the score 4-1.

For Welty, it was his first game after spending most of the last two months on the disabled list. "It felt great to finally play a game," Welty said. "I was so nervous going out there so it was nice to contribute a little bit. That team came out swinging really well and we were in the hole to start the game, but we battled back as best we could."

Trenton struck again in the top of the third inning. Adonis Garcia hit a lead off double to left field and scored when Maruszak singled to center field to give the Thunder a 5-1 lead.

In the next inning, the Thunder struck for the fourth straight inning. Murphy drew a one-out walk and Ibarra hit a two out single back at the pitcher that struck Gamboa and knocked him out of the game. Left-handed reliever Chris Petrini replaced Gamboa on the mound and immediately surrendered a two-run double to Pirela that made the score 7-1.

Bowie cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Catcher Brian Ward and center fielder Jai Miller drew back-to-back walks with one out. Left fielder Josh Barfield then singled to load the bases and second baseman Jonathan Schoop followed with a single to plate Ward and keep the bases loaded. With two outs and first baseman Rhyne Hughes batting, Trenton catcher JR Murphy allowed a passed ball that let Miller score and make the score 7-3.

The Baysox chipped away at the deficit again in the bottom of the sixth inning against Trenton reliever Kelvin Perez. Shortstop Manny Machado hit a leadoff double to left field, moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a Welty double to left field that made the score 7-4.

Trenton added some insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning against Baysox reliever Andy Loomis. Murphy reached on a fielding error by Kelly and Jose Gil followed with a walk. With two outs, Pirela singled to shortstop to load the bases and Garcia followed with an RBI single to shortstop. On the play, Machado threw the ball over Schoop's head while attempting the force out at second base, allowing two more runs to score and extend the lead to 10-4.

The Baysox got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Joseph hit a two-run home run into left field against Graham Stoneburner to make the score 10-6.

Gamboa pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out seven batters and walking one before being knocked out of the game. He was tagged with the loss. Petrini pitched three and one-third scoreless innings and allowed four hits while striking out two batters. Loomis pitched one inning and allowed three unearned runs on two hits while walking one batter and striking out one. Clay Schrader pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Baysox.

Nuno earned the win for Trenton, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out nine batters and walking two.

The Baysox are home through Sunday, August 5 for a six game homestand. The activities include AAGPBL Night Saturday, August 4 at 6:35 p.m. and the Football Kick Off Party Sunday, August 5 beginning at 6:05 p.m.
