Dogs Drop 'Wolves in Series Opener

The SeaWolves could not make it three straight wins as they dropped the series opener to the Portland Sea Dogs 5-1 at Hadlock Field on Friday night.

Portland jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Ramon Garcia. Jackie Bradley, Jr. led off and on the first pitch of the inning, belted a solo home run to right-center for a 1-0 Sea Dogs lead. With two outs in the inning, Bryce Brentz blasted a solo home run over the "Maine Monster" in left making it 2-0 Portland.

The Sea Dogs added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Travis Shaw led of with a double and moved to third on a one-out Christian Vazquez single. Derrik Gibson walked to load the bases for Ronald Bermudez. Bermudez hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Shaw for a 3-0 lead. Bradley Jr. singled home Vazquez for a 4-0 Portland edge.

The SeaWolves avoided the shutout in the top of the eighth against reliever Chris Balcom-Miller. With one out, Daniel Fields was hit by a pitch and he moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Fields moved to third on a Niuman Romero groundout and scored on a wild pitch making it 4-1.

The Sea Dogs plated an additional run in the last of the eighth and went on for the 5-1 win.

Garcia (7-8) allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The SeaWolves and Sea Dogs meet in the middle game of the series on Saturday night at Hadlock Field.6:00 First Pitch. RHP Jared Gayhart (1-2, 4.62 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Stolmy Pimentel (4-5, 5.25 ERA).
