Game #111 - Friday, August 3, 2012
FirstEnergy Stadium - Reading, PA - 7:05 PM
LAST GAME: Dustin Martin rolled a walk-off single through the hole on the right side to give Binghamton a 4-3 win over the Harrisburg Senators in twelve innings last night at NYSEG Stadium. Martin's hit, Binghamton's 15th of the night, ended a four-hour, seven-minute contest that saw a total of 28 runners left on base. In the final frame, the B-Mets got two aboard against Jimmy Barthmaier. Patrick McCoy was brought in to face Martin and allowed a weak ground ball that eluded the glove of first baseman Justin Bloxom and rolled into right, allowing Raul Reyes to score from second. Adam Kolarek capped five shutout innings by the B-Mets pen with a scoreless twelfth and earned his first Double-A win. Barthmaier suffered the loss.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (6-5, 3.98) makes his 19th start of the season and his first against the Reading Phillies. Gorski snapped a five-game winless streak with a victory in his last start against the Portland Sea Dogs on July 27. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out six over six innings. The southpaw went 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA in five starts in July. After averaging one walk in every 7.8 innings in June, Gorski handed out a walk every 2.3 innings in July.
RHP Ethan Martin (8-6, 3.58) makes his first start as member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Martin was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Phillies with Josh Lindblom for Shane Victorino on July 31. The righty was a member of the Chattanooga Lookouts (LAD: AA) starting rotation before the trade. He won his final start against the Birmingham Barons on July 28, allowing five runs on five hits over five innings. In 118.0 innings with Chattanooga he held opponents to a .214 batting average, including a .171 clip to righties. However, he handed out 61 walks, issuing four free passes or more eight times. The 23-year-old was the 15th overall pick in the 2008 draft by the Dodgers out of Stephens County School (GA).
BULLPEN BLOWING THEM AWAY: Four B-Mets relievers combined for five shutout innings last night against the Senators. The Binghamton bullpen did not allow a single run during their seven-game homestand, a stretch spanning 17.2 innings. Over that time, they allowed just 11 hits, handed out only four walks and racked up 22 strikeouts. The bullpen has lowered their season ERA from 4.53 to 4.27 during the streak.
STRETCHING IT OUT: Last night's game was the longest for the B-Mets since they took 4:14 to play 14 innings against the Harrisburg Senators on July 28, 2011.
THE GORY DETAILS: The 12-inning contest last night saw 27 hits, 5 errors, 28 left on base, 33 players (including 11 pitchers), 105 at-bats and 374 pitches. The teams combined to go 4-for-31 with runners in scoring position. The Senators went 0-for-15 with men in scoring position.
CLOSE TO HOME: B-Mets starter Darin Gorski hails from Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, located less than one hour southwest of Reading. Gorski attended college at Kutztown University, which lies just 20 miles north of Reading.
MEMORABLE HOMESTAND FOR MARTIN: B-Mets outfielder Dustin Martin hit safely in all seven games during Binghamton's last homestand and is on an eight-game hitting streak. He provided the eventual game-winning RBI in three of the B-Mets five wins. Overall during the stand, he went 12-for-25 with a home run, four runs scored and eight RBI.
CHANCE TO MAKE UP GROUND: The next eight games for Binghamton are against teams above them in the standings. They take on the third-place Reading Phillies in a four-game series before hosting the second-place New Britain Rock Cats for four more.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series against the Reading Phillies with a doubleheader starting tomorrow at 5:35 PM. RHP Greg Peaveytakes the mound against RHP Julio Rodriguez in the opener. RHP Armando Rodriguez opposes LHP Mario Hollandsin the nightcap.
